Mission, Vision and Values
Out on Campus is students, staff, faculty, allies, and alumni working together to reduce discrimination and increase awareness about lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, aromantic, agender, transgender and queer people on campus and in society. We are committed to resisting all forms of discrimination and oppression, and recognize that LGBATQ+ people represent a wide diversity of communities.
To honour the legacy of 40+ years of LGBATQ+ activism at SFU, we are dedicated to maintaining and expanding the autonomy, sustainability, accessibility and inclusivity of Out on Campus. We are intentionally addressing the concerns of members facing intersectional oppressions and reaching out to those communities by making our space, programming, and resources more relevant. We are striving towards disability justice by ensuring that access needs are met in our space and at our events. While we are committed to providing support for learning, tools for compassion, and skill-building for caring, we are prioritizing the reduction of harm within our community.
Community – We are a group of individuals who, despite differences, care for each other, and work together toward a common goal.
Sustainability – We are working with our individual and collective resources in order to continuously contribute to social change while respecting personal limits and organizational capacity.
Inclusivity – We are helping everyone feel welcome, valued, and respected, so that no one feels left out even if they don’t want to participate.
Accessibility – We are supporting everyone’s participation, ability to use the things in the space, and join in activities when and if they want to.
Education – We are providing the opportunity to learn, teach, and grow to individuals within and without the OOC community.
Social Justice – We are creating equality and healing in a world where inequality hurts people.
Out on Campus is a department of the Simon Fraser Student Society. We are funded both by the SFSS and the Graduate Student Society. Throughout the semester we offer a wide range of events and activities, ranging from socials to workshops to discussion groups. We also offer references to counselling and support for students, staff, and faculty of Simon Fraser University.
